The Gee-Gees Synchro Club has been a student run club under the Competitive Sports Clubs (CSC) program at the University of Ottawa since September 2003. In its first year, the club consisted of one team (8 swimmers and 2 alternates), one novice swimmer and two student-coaches. Since then, the club has continued to grow and mature. This past season, our club consisted of 35 swimmers. We are proud to say that we are officially the biggest university synchro club in the country! As of the 2014-2015 season, we had 3 competitive teams, 1 novice team, as well as a novice duet competing for us.
The club is a member of the Canadian University Synchronized Swimming League (CUSSL) that was formed in 2001. This league contains 14 Universities, ranging from the West all the way to the East. All Universities who would like to compete nationally with their synchro team is a member of CUSSL. This league holds 3 competitions annually: Invitationals, Easterns/Westerns, as well as Nationals. All competition events include both the competitive and novice categories and each category holds a team, duet, solo and combo event. Our club’s status within the league has continued to grow with the years and for the past 2 years, our Garnet team has placed at every competition.
Our season starts with the beginning of classes, the first week of September, and runs until early April. We always hold an Annual Information Night on the first Sunday after the Labor Day Long Weekend, an all interested swimmers are invited to participate! We have a short try-out period, where we divide teams based on skill, experience, and technique. However, if you would like to swim with our club, there will be a spot for you! Then our competitive season continues until mid-February. Afterwards, we hold an end-of-season Watershow to showcase our competitive routines (and a few new ones!) from the past year.
