Pouliot, Fogarty, Wagman named Clubs Athletes of the Year
Sports Services held its annual Competitve Clubs awards banquet on Thursday night to celebrate the seasons of its 21 club teams. Most valuable players from each team were honoured as well as five major award winners for the year. Synchronized swimmer Catherine Pouliot and rower Alanna Fogarty shared this year’s Female Clubs Athlete of the Year award while Nick Wagman of fencing took home the Male Clubs Athlete of the Year honour.
Pouliot won silver medals in both solo and team with the Gee-Gees at the National Championships and also took silver in solo at the Eastern Championships. The third-year student was also a Canadian Open Champion this year.
Fogarty claimed silver at the OUA Championships in both the lightweight women’s single and the lightweight doubles with Dana Howell. At the Canadian University Rowing Championships she added a silver in the singles. The third-year student also won gold as part of the Ottawa Rowing Club’s lightweight women’s eight crew at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta and she has been invited to national team training camps.
Wagman had a breakthrough year in his first competition at the OUA Championships, taking bronze in the men’s individual foil and helping the team capture a silver medal in foil. He then went on to win gold at the National University Championship.
The Awards of Merit, which recognize student-athletes who best combine commitment to their sport, academics, and community service, were presented to Elissa Sivel of the fastball team and Rémi Grimard from the men’s ultimate team.
Sivel is a Dean’s List student and now Master’s of Education student, an elite athlete in fastball, and a model for giving back to her community as a volunteer coach, NCCP instructor and NCCP certified coach developer. In her seven years with the fastball team, she has taken on every leadership role offered and become the face of the program.
Grimard, who is in his third year with the Faculty of Social Sciences, is a hard-working and committed ultimate player who has volunteered much of his time. In the summer of 2014, Rémi worked for an NGO in Senegal. At the NGO, he would monitor elections in Dakar to ensure that they were free and fair and to help avoid violence or intimidation. He was also a key participant in training volunteers in preparation for the election. Aside from electoral support, Rémi started a project to monitor the condition of children in Senegalese prisons.
